Sheriff identifies man shot by Fresno County deputy during confrontation

The man shot by a Fresno County deputy responding to a home invasion call Tuesday evening has been identified.

Juwan Priddie, 24, of Santa Maria remained in the hospital in critical condition, Fresno County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Tony Botti said in an update Wednesday.

Around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, deputies responded to a reported home invasion near Olive and Cornelia avenues.

People at the scene later said they didn’t know a suspect who had forced his way into the home before fleeing in a white van that was carrying ladders.

Shortly afterward, another 911 call came in regarding a man in the same vehicle threatening to kill people near Garfield and Shields avenues.

The deputy responded to the scene and made contact with Priddie before a struggle ensued.

“The suspect attacked him, and there was a physical altercation,” Zanoni said. “During that altercation, our deputy fired approximately three rounds in defense of himself.”

The deputy was also treated for unknown injuries at the same hospital as Priddie.

Priddie has been electronically booked into Fresno County Jail and is being held on $100,000 bail. He faces charges including attempted burglary, resisting arrest with violence, obstruction, making death threats, assault, battery on an officer and battery causing serious injury.
