A deputy shot a suspect Tuesday evening after responding to what investigators believe were two connected incidents involving an alleged home invasion and threats to residents in Fresno County.

Sheriff John Zanoni said the incident began shortly before 6:30 p.m. when a deputy went to a reported home invasion near Olive and Cornelia avenues.

Zanoni said a man allegedly forced his way through the front door of a home where the occupants did not know him and he was unwelcome.

Before deputies arrived, the suspect fled in a white van with a ladder truck. Witnesses provided a license plate number and vehicle description.

While the deputy was still investigating the home invasion, a second 911 call came in several minutes later from the Garfield Avenue area, across from Roosevelt Elementary School.

The callers reported that a man matching the earlier suspect’s description had arrived in the same white van and was threatening to kill them.

The deputy immediately responded to the second location.

When the deputy confronted the suspect, an altercation broke out.

“The suspect attacked him, and there was a physical altercation,” Zanoni said. “During that altercation, our deputy fired approximately three rounds in defense of himself.”

The suspect was struck by the gunfire and taken to Community Regional Medical Center, where he underwent surgery.

The suspect is in critical condition.

The deputy also suffered injuries, and was taken by ambulance to the same hospital for treatment.

Zanoni believe the same suspect was responsible for both the reported home invasion near Olive and Cornelia and the threats made on Garfield Avenue.

Authorities have not recovered a weapon, and investigators are still working to determine whether he was armed during the incidents.

The suspect’s identity has not yet been released as detectives continue working to confirm who he is.

Zanoni said the deputy involved had been working with the department for about 3 to 4 years.

It is Fresno County Sheriff’s Office first deputy-involved shooting in 2026.
