Coroner ID’s driver who died in rear-end crash that also killed dog in Fresno

The Fresno County Coroner’s Office has identified a 63-year-old Fresno man who was killed in a rear-end crash that closed an intersection west of Highway 168 on Monday.

Daniel Martinez died when the sedan he was driving was hit from behind at Gettysburg and Maple avenues. The coroner confirmed the victim’s identity Wednesday morning.

According to police, Martinez died at the scene of the crash, along with a dog that was in the car at the time. A second driver, who police said rear-ended Martinez, was taken to the hospital.

It is unclear exactly how the collision played out, but at least three vehicles were hit, including two cars parked along Gettysburg Avenue, which was closed to traffic while police investigated. Police at the time said they didn’t know whether drugs or alcohol were factors. An update was not immediately available Wednesday morning.
