UPDATE: Older couple hits big rig trailer in SUV, killing wife. Fresno County woman identified

A 70-year-old woman died and her 72-year-old husband suffered major injuries in a crash with a big rig hauling grapes in Fresno County, the California Highway Patrol said Thursday.

A 32-year-old Firebaugh man was driving the big rig within a vineyard about 9:20 p.m. Wednesday near Manning and Yuba avenues east of San Joaquin, CHP said.

He pulled out of the vineyard while turning left onto eastbound Manning directly in the path of a Honda HRV driven by the 72-year-old, CHP said.

The Honda struck the rear axle of the trailer, causing major injuries to the older couple, CHP said.

The woman was flown to Community Regional Medical Center where she later died, CHP said.

No alcohol or drugs were suspected of playing a part in the crash.
