Worker at Foster Farms killed in alleged hit-and-run at Fresno facility, CHP says

UPDATE: Worker killed by van at Foster Farms in Fresno identified by coroner. Driver arrested

A laborer at a Foster Farms facility in Fresno County was killed when he was struck by a car driven by another worker, the California Highway Patrol said on Thursday.

A 40-year-old Fresno man got into a company-owned Chrysler Pacifica Van about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday and began driving it within the private property of the facility at 10535 Englehart Avenue in Reedley, CHP said.

He was not given permission to drive the van, according to a news release.

The CHP described the driver as a Foster Farms employee, but officials with the poultry-rendering company said Thursday he was working for a temporary agency.

Officers have not explained how the crash happened at the property near Dinuba and Buttonwillow avenues, but said the van hit a 25-year-old man.

The 40-year-old did not stop and instead left the property headed north on Englehart, CHP said.

The victim was taken to Community Regional Medical Center and later died, CHP said.

The man in the van stopped a short time later after seeing a CHP officer at an unrelated stop and gave himself up to the officer, according to a news release.

He was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter, CHP said. He was also determined to not have a license.

He remained in custody Thursday and his bail was set at $20,000, according to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.
