Man identified as body pulled from Fresno canal, coroner says. The waterway was full

A Coalinga man was identified as the person whose body was recently pulled from a Fresno canal, the Fresno County Coroner’s Office said Monday.

Joel Zuniga, 38, was originally from Coalinga but more recently was homeless in Fresno before he was found in the full canal, the coroner’s office said.

His body was reported in the waterway about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday along Mckinley Avenue between Cedar Avenue and Ninth Street, police said.

Police and the Fresno Fire Department responded and confirmed Zuniga had died, he said.

Detectives initially treated the case as suspicious as a precaution, but have since said they suspect no foul play.
