Second victim dies in Avocado Lake incident. Coroner identifies them as Fresno brothers
Two brothers died while swimming at Avocado Lake on Sunday.
The Fresno County Coroners Office on Monday identified the men as 25-year-old Silverio Calihua and 23-year-old Alvaro Calihua, both of Fresno.
The incident happened just after 3 p.m. when the brothers went underwater and didn’t resurfaced. Other visitors at the the lake were able to bring Silverio to shore, where he was given CPR for several minutes before being taken to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno, where he later died.
Alvaro was pulled from the lake by members of the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team after a two-hour search.
The specific circumstances leading up to the two men drowning is unknown, according to the coroner’s office, but on Sunday, the sheriff’s office said it was possible they could have become tangled in underwater vegetation.
The Sheriff’s Office used the drownings to remind people to be safe around pools and natural waterways, encouraging them to heed debris in the water, especially in rivers and lakes where it can be difficult to see. Do not mix alcohol and swimming and staying out of the water if you are not an experienced swimmer, the sheriff’s office said.
