Victim in upper Kings River drowning on Memorial Day identified by Fresno coroner

A man drowned on Memorial Day in the upper Kings River, the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office said.

Spokesman Tony Botti said at 5:30 p.m. a family member called 911 to report that a relative was under water in the Kings River and could not swim.

The sheriff’s helicopter, Eagle One, and several deputies, including Boating Enforcement units, responded.

About 40 minutes later, the helicopter located the man, identified Tuesday as 40-year-old Alberto Munoz of Madera, under 8 feet of water and in a heavy current about 2 miles past Camp 4 1/2 in the Mill Flat area.

The dive team and search and rescue team responded.

Around 8:15 p.m., Munoz was recovered from the river.
