Body found in backseat after car crash in northwest Fresno. Driver and others fled scene

A man was killed early Sunday in a traffic collision in northwest Fresno.

The crash happened at 1 a.m. at the intersection of West Spruce and North Thiele avenues.

Fresno Police Lt. Brian Pierce said the initial call came in as vehicle versus pole, but they discovered the silver BMW collided with a parked car. Officers found a man in the backseat.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical service.

Pierce said the driver and the passenger in the front seat fled the scene, and there “could’ve been more” people in the vehicle that left.

Officers are canvassing the area for surveillance video and also talking to witnesses. Detectives are investigating the fatal collision.
