Woman suspected in attempted shooting surrenders after standoff with Fresno police

A woman barricaded herself inside a central Fresno apartment Wednesday evening after she allegedly pointed a gun at several people.

Fresno Police Lt. Paul Cervantes said a SWAT team was called at 11 p.m., to the location at the 3800 block of North Fruit Avenue after the woman was in a disturbance with at least four people and pointed a gun and pulled the trigger hours earlier. No shots were fired.

The woman barricaded herself inside before she surrendered after midnight.

Cervantes said police received a call at 4:20 p.m. about a man who was inside a vehicle at the City Wide Market at Fruit and Dakota. Then at 4:38 p.m., officers responded to a ShotSpotter electronic surveillance system notification in the 700 block of West Sussex Avenue.

Officers obtained a video of the suspect’s vehicle and believe it was the same person who fired the shots at the Sussex location. Shell casings were found, and the man was later arrested.

Officers determined the vehicle matched to an apartment on North Fruit Avenue.

The woman was identified by the victims and officers began negotiations with her. She was on and off the phone with police, Cervantes said. Police believe she was intoxicated.

Her 15-year-old son was in the home and was later safely evacuated by police.

Police believe the man and woman were in a relationship.

Residents at the apartment were put in a shelter-in-place.

No one was injured.
