A new player is joining the chicken sandwich wars – and it’s testing its creations right here in Fresno.

Wingstop is testing 11 flavors of chicken sandwiches in Fresno starting Monday, May 16.

It’s the latest move in the battle for the best chicken sandwich after Popeye’s kicked off the trend (complete with sell outs in Fresno) and a ton of other restaurants joined the fray.

Panera, Burger King and Chick-fil-A have all launched new chicken sandwiches in recent years. And a ton of new chicken restaurants, from Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers to Fluckers Nashville Hot Chicken, have opened in the Fresno and Clovis area recently.

Wingstop is a fast food chain most known for wings, like its name says. But it’s testing the sandwiches in 60 restaurants in Fresno, Calif.; Columbus, Ohio; Las Vegas, Nev.; and Orlando, Fla.

The sandwich is made with a “crispy, juicy chicken breast,” that is hand tossed in any of the 11 flavors, served on a buttery toasted bun with pickles. Diners are encouraged to dunk it in a side of ranch.

The 11 flavors are ones you can already get wings tossed in: original hot, Cajun, atomic, mild, spicy Korean Q, lemon pepper, Hawaiian, garlic parmesan, hickory smoked BBQ, Louisiana rub and mango habanero.

The chicken sandwich alone costs $5.49. The combo, which comes with fries, a drink and a dip (like that ranch), costs $7.99.
