Raiders’ Derek Carr sees first game action since December. How did he fare?
Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr returned to see his first NFL game action – albeit in an exhibition – since his 2016 season ended in injury.
How did Carr look against the Los Angeles Rams? Good, even with an interception.
Carr, on Oakland’s first possession, connected down the middle with tight end Lee Smith for a 16-yard touchdown pass. The ex-Fresno State star was 2 of 2 for 35 yards on the drive with a passer rating 158.3.
But on the Raiders’ next offensive series, Carr, while evading pressure, was picked off by cornerback Trumaine Johnson.
Carr remained in the game into the second quarter and passed for a 13-yard TD to Michael Crabtree. The drive was highlighted by Amari Cooper’s 23-yard reception to the Rams 23.
The fourth-year pro finished 7 of 9 for 100 yards, with a passer rating of 113.0.
The Rams defeated Oakland 24-21.
“It was so nice to be out there,” Carr said. “What a privilege it is to be able to walk back up that ramp. Last time I was here I wasn’t able to do that. Every single time I’ll never take it for granted again to be able to walk up that ramp and walk over to my wife and my babies and love on them. It was definitely emotional, but at the same time it’s over with and it’s time to play ball.”
It had been eight months since Carr suffered a broken right fibula in a Christmas Eve game against the Indianapolis Colts.

Raiders coach Jack Del Rio had said going into Saturday that his preference was to play his starters – including Carr – through at least the first quarter against the Rams and that plan held true.
Starters figure to play even more in next weekend’s third exhibition, at 5 p.m. Saturday gainst the Dallas Cowboys.
Typically, the third game of the preseason is seen as a dress rehearsal for the opener, with key players seeing little, if any, action in the fourth and final exhibition.
The Raiders open Sept. 10 against the Tennessee Titans in Nashville.
