How much have Raiders’ Henry Ruggs III and Bryan Edwards looked up to Derek Carr?
When wide receivers Henry Ruggs III and Bryan Edwards were drafted in April, Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr jumped to welcome them to the organization.
It was a quick bond with Carr the rookies really appreciated that turned into an easy transition for them.
“DC been extremely helpful for me and Henry, just being young guys,” Edwards said. “Obviously having a veteran in there helps tremendously. I’m going to take advantage of my opportunities. That’s why I’m here and that’s why they brought me here. I’m just going to go out there and play to the best of my ability.”
Ruggs said Carr is always helpful especially when someone has a question about any play that is drawn up.
That is key for the former Alabama standout who never attended an NFL game.
“That’s been big to me,” he said. “It will help us develop and move into the offense faster.”
It is very likely the rookies Ruggs and Edwards will see plenty of playing time in the season opener Sunday.
The Raiders open on the road against the Carolina Panthers. Kickoff is set for 10 a.m. on CBS.
Both receivers said they are up for the challenge in their first NFL game.
“Definitely ready for the opportunity,” Ruggs said. “Ready to get it going and get back on the field and compete.”
Edwards said, “I feel pretty comfortable in the offense now.”
Ruggs was selected with the 12th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. The Raiders drafted Edwards in the third round (81st overall).
Carr has total confidence in Ruggs III, Edwards and all the Raiders’ receivers.
“Those are my guys,” he said. “That’s who’s on our team and that’s who we’re going to bat with. That’s who we’ve been equipped with. We got all we need, so we’re ready to rock. It’s Week 1, I’m just excited to play and get out there with those guys.”
Besides Ruggs and Edwards, the Raiders welcome back Hunter Renfrow, Zay Jones and Rico Gafford. The Raiders’ wide receiver corps include Nelson Agholor, whom the Raiders signed in the offseason. Tyrell Williams, who led the team with six receiving touchdowns last season, is starting the season on injured reserve with a torn labrum in his right shoulder.
