Grizzlies Report for June 15: Fresno 6, Sacramento 3
Monday recap: Giants RH Matt Cain started for Sacramento — and the Grizzlies got to him for four runs (three earned) on six hits on their way to a 6-3 victory at Raley Field in the opener of a four-game PCL series to improve to 39-25. Dan Straily pitched seven shutout innings for the Grizzlies, allowing only four baserunners and striking out seven. Cain also struck out seven and walked two before he was lifted in the middle of an at-bat after 3 1/3 innings because he had reached his 75-pitch count. Among the damage the Grizzlies inflicted was a third-inning solo home run by Matt Duffy. Cain, who struck out seven, told The Sacramento Bee that his off-speed pitches were better than his last outing and his fastball command was “a little off” but that it “feels like it’s pretty close to being right.” The Grizzlies’ Jon Singleton extending his hitting streak to 11 games with a single in the third inning and then added a run-scoring single in the fourth, giving him a minor leagues-leading 60 RBIs.
Grizzlies on Tuesday: Fresno will face a rehabbing San Francisco Giants pitcher for the second time in as many days when Sacramento’s RH Jake Peavy (0-1, 8.10) opposes RH Asher Wojciechowski (4-0, 4.50) in the second of a three-game series at Raley Field, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. Peavy, on the disabled list with a back injury, will be making his third start for Sacramento.
Stat of the day: .545, the batting average Grizzlies’ outfielder Domingo Santana posted while winning Pacific Coast League Player of the Week honors for the period of June 8-14. He reached base in all six games while extending his on-base streak to a PCL-leading 34 straight games. But Santana was not Fresno’s lineup Monday — the right-handed hitter is on his way to the parent Astros to fill in for Colby Rasmus, who is expected to be placed on the bereavement list.
