TRAC turnover: Clovis Unified football coach resigns after another losing season
Clovis East High’s continued struggle to field a competitive football team has led to a coaching change.
Clovis Unified School District confirmed in a news release Wednesday evening that Ryan Reynolds resigned as the Timberwolves coach.
Reynolds, 43, made the announcement to the assistant coaches and players, and parents were informed of the impending change Wednesday afternoon.
“We are grateful for the dedication and commitment Coach Reynolds has given to our football program,” Clovis East Principal Ryan Eisele said.
Calls to Reynolds were not returned.
Clovis East went 15-32 in five seasons under Reynolds, including 4-5 overall and 0-3 in Tri-River Athletic Conference play this season, according to Central Section historian Bob Barnett.
The Timberwolves fielded a .500 team in the abbreviated 2020 season that was played primarily in the spring (five of six games) when Clovis East finished 3-3 overall (2-3 in TRAC).
But it had been a pretty rough go otherwise — though, Reynolds wasn’t exactly dealt a winning hand when he took over.
Prior to replacing Jim O’Brien in 2017, the Timberwolves lost a section-record 35 consecutive league games in seven years and hadn’t recorded a winning season since 2008.
Under Reynolds, Clovis East made some improvement and eventually broke its losing streak in the TRAC.
But ultimately, the most the Timberwolves ever won in the TRAC was twice in a season and the most Clovis East won in a season under Reynolds was four games.
Clovis Unified said the Clovis East administration is expected to begin a statewide search immediately for the next Timberwolves football coach. A hire is expected to be made before spring football.
Reynolds will continue to teach at Clovis East.
