Safety measures to be added at Fresno football game. Here is what to expect

Central High gained a home football game this week because smoke from the Caldor Fire has created dangerous air conditions in the Reno area.

The Grizzlies will now host Damonte Ranch-Reno at 6 p.m. Friday at Deran Koligian Stadium.

Central, however, said tickets will be sold only to Central Unified students with a limit of six per family because of the short notice and COVID-19 concerns.

Central said it will also add more personnel inside the stadium for safety after last week’s shooting outside the stadium in the parking lot where a 19-year-old was wounded following the Central-Bullard game. A suspect, 19-year-old Taevion Yancey, was arrested.

“We do want to assure that we will have increased supervision in and around Deran Koligian Stadium,” Central Unified School District said. “Staffing numbers at the game will be dependent on the crowd size. Due to the pandemic, capacity will be limited, as we try to reduce community spread. At gate entrances we will have bag checks and attendees will be wanded, which is common at professional games.”

The Fresno Police Department said it will have six officers and a sergeant at the game, but is not expecting any problems.

“Central has also taken some preventative measures including hiring a private security company to be on scene,” Fresno Police Sgt. Diana Trueba-Vega said. “They will have campus assistants and their administration team at the game, as well.”
