Caruthers, Sierra Pacific to meet in section final. Here are the championship matchups
The showdown is set between the Central Section’s most recent state powers.
Sierra Pacific High and Caruthers will play for the Central Section Division IV girls basketball championship.
The top-seeded Golden Bears defeated No. 4 Washington Union 73-62, and the No. 3 Blue Raiders coasted to a 52-36 win over No. 2 Orcutt Academy in the semifinal round.
Sierra Pacific and Caruthers will tip off at 10 a.m. Saturday at Selland Arena.
The Blue Raiders are the defending section champs after beating Coalinga 56-44 in last season’s Division V championship. From there, Caruthers went on to capture a state title with a 62-38 victory over Ramona-Riverside.
Sierra Pacific isn’t a stranger to championship play, either, having won the state D-V title in 2018. Last year, the Golden Bears lost in the section D-IV semfinals but made it to the Southern California regional final.
Other finals matchups
No. 1 San Joaquin Memorial advanced, rolling to a 79-37 win over No. 5 Selma in Division II.
The Panthers, winners of four straight section titles including D-IV last season, will face No. 6 Mission Prep at 2 p.m. Saturday. Mission Prep denied No. 2 Yosemite a return trip to the D-II final, beating the Badgers 45-43 in Oakhurst.
In addition, No. 1 Porterville advanced to the section championship after defeating No. 4 Hoover 67-57. Porterville will face No. 2 Arvin for the Division III championship at 2 p.m. Friday.
Strathmore punched its ticket to the championship with a 60-44 victory over Corcoran. The Spartans will play East for the Division V title at 10 a.m. Friday.
