Craziness in the TRAC! Clovis North pulls off a huge win that benefits Clovis West

Clovis North caused chaos as the Tri-River Athletic Conference wrapped up in exciting fashion.

Clovis West will probably send a thank you note for that.

The Bee’s seventh-ranked Broncos got a huge interception by Aaron Hamilton with 1:29 remaining with the game against No. 3 Central tied at 28-28.

Clovis North then took the lead on McKay Madsen’s 5-yard touchdown run, giving the Broncos a 35-28 victory over the Grizzlies in a high school football game at Koligian Stadium on Friday.

“I was having flashbacks from last year,” said Clovis North coach Michael Jacot, whose team lost to the Grizzlies in 2021. “...Our guys right now, credit to them for the way they handled adversity. They couldn’t let that creep in and we had a tough time playing here. I’m really proud of this group, especially our seniors right now.”

Clovis West shuts out Clovis

With Central’s loss and Clovis West’s 27-0 victory over Clovis, the Golden Eagles are outright TRAC champions for the first time since 2010.

Clovis North is on a roll heading into the Central Section Division I playoffs, defeating Buchanan and Central in back-to-back weeks.

Players celebrated after Central’s Dayton Tafoya threw a desperation pass that sailed over the end zone with no time remaining.

Some players yelled “don’t sleep on us.” Message sent to other section teams.

Clovis North, Central and Buchanan finished tied for second in the TRAC at 3-2.

Just how crazy was the TRAC this season?

Clovis West defeated Buchanan; Central defeated Clovis West; Clovis North beat Central and Buchanan; Clovis West over Clovis North; and Clovis East beat Clovis North.

Momentum for Clovis North heading into the playoffs?

“In the past, we’ve been kind of limping into the playoffs with that stretch with Buchanan, Central, Clovis High, it’s been a tough stretch for us,” Jacot said.

“It feels good. We felt like we have a lot of energy last week coming off a Buchanan win. It was awesome.”

Playoff pairings will be announced Saturday afternoon.

Twelve teams will play in Division I. The section office said the Calprep ratings are a starting point where teams are seeded in each division.

TRAC standings

Clovis West 4-1 (9-1), Buchanan 3-2 (8-2), Central 3-2 (6-4), Clovis North 3-2 (6-4), Clovis 1-4 (4-6), Clovis East 1-4 (6-4)
