Fresno prep sports notebook: Basketball, soccer latest rankings, plus records fall

The Clovis West boys and girls basketball teams remain atop The Bee’s rankings with one week left in the regular season.

Next week is the start of the Central Section playoffs; the playoff pairings for the Open and Divisions I-V will be released Saturday.

The Golden Eagles held on to the top spot after a dramatic 97-87 win over Central. Clovis West trailed by 22 points.

Mt. Whitney boys remain undefeated at 26-0 and moved up one spot to No. 4. The Pioneers will look to close out the regular season undefeated with games remaining against Lemoore and Redwood.

Clovis North moved up two spots to No. 5 after wins over Clovis East and Clovis. Clovis East fell to No. 6 after two losses last week.

On the girls side, Buchanan went up two spots to No. 6 after a big win over Central.

Sanger boys soccer holds top spot

Sanger is now the top-ranked team by The Bee after Clovis East lost to Clovis North for its first defeat in the Tri-River Athletic Conference.

The Timberwolves dropped one spot to No. 2 with Central and Clovis North behind.

Clovis East and Central will play on Friday, a match that could decide the Tri-River Athletic Conference champion.

Soccer playoff brackets will be announced Saturday.

Records fall

San Joaquin Memorial senior Joseph Hunter scored a school-record 54 points in a 99-57 win over Madera South.

Hunter passed Roscoe Pondexter, who scored 52 points in 1971, according to section historian Bob Barnett.

The 54 points is the second best in section history, Barnett said.

Morgan Trigueiro also set records for Caruthers.

She set a school record when she scored 47 points — 31 in the first half.

She finished the game with 12 3-pointers (second best in section history) and became the sixth player in school history to join the 1,000-point club after a 101-25 victory over Fowler, Barnett said.

Caruthers as a team set a school record with 22 3-pointers — third most in section history.

Athlete of the Week winners

Landon Almeida of Caruthers basketball and Darleth Felix of Tulare Union basketball are the winners of The Bee’s Boys and Girls Athlete of the Week poll for Jan. 24-29.

Almeida totaled 139,023 votes (61%) to finish in front of Ismael Gonzalez of Riverdale soccer with 87,945 votes (38%).

Almeida had a career-high 42 points and grabbed 16 rebounds in the Blue Raiders’ victory over Orosi.

Thirteen athletes were nominated.

The nominees were from basketball and soccer.

Recent winners: Orion Tomlinson of Fresno Christian basketball and Camden Thompson of Clovis East basketball.

Felix, meanwhile, finished ahead of Treasure Franklin of Bullard basketball, who received 42,891 votes (38%). Coming in third was Mia Carrillo of Immanuel soccer (9,115 votes, 8%).

Felix finished with 24 points in the Tribe’s victory over Monache.

Fifteen athletes were nominated.

The nominees were from basketball and soccer.

Recent winners: Athena Tomlinson of Clovis West basketball and Melayna Vasquez of Fowler soccer.
