Prep football, baseball & softball rankings; milestones for Clovis Unified coaches

Buchanan High is still No. 1 in The Fresno Bee prep football Top 10 rankings this week after rolling past Clovis North 51-3 at Veterans Memorial Stadium last week.

No. 2 Central had a convincing 38-13 win over Clovis West.

San Joaquin Memorial moved up one spot to No. 5 after rolling past No. 7 Bullard 29-2.

Debuting in the rankings is Sanger, checking in at No. 9 after a 34-0 win over Edison.

Coca-Cola Classic in full swing

The annual Coca-Cola Classic baseball tournament has completed four rounds and San Joaquin Memorial is 4-0 with just 10 runs allowed through Tuesday.

Second is Buchanan at 3-1 with eight runs given up, followed by Tulare Western (3-1, 14), Clovis North (3-1, 20), Clovis (3-1, 23), Clovis West (2-1-1, 10), Bullard (2-1-1, 16), Madera (2-2, 17), Edison (2-2, 20), Fresno (2-2, 21), Redwood (2-2, 24) and Mt. Whitney (2-2, 34).

Games continue the rest of the week.

Milestones for the Patricks

Clovis baseball coach Chris Patrick notched his 200th career win Tuesday when the Cougars defeated Fresno 10-2.

On the same day, Kevin Patrick picked up his 350th career win as Clovis West’ beat Madera 12-3.

They have a ways to go to catch their legendary father, James Patrick, who compiled a coaching career record of 756-272-3 in two seasons at San Joaquin Memorial (1983-1984) and 32 at Clovis (1988-2019), according to section historian Bob Barnett.

Huge basketball rematch

In the first marquee matchup of the boys basketball season, San Joaquin Memorial beat Clovis West 73-59 Saturday behind Joseph Hunter’s 29 points. He scored 16 points in the fourth quarter to help Memorial pull away from the Golden Eagles.

It was a rematch of the Central Section Open Division championship in 2020 at Selland Arena won by Clovis West 51-49.
