Nerves, joy gives ex-Buchanan/Fresno City standout a chance to shine at Fresno State
Josiah Ayon was nervously walking back and forth when Fresno State head coach Matt Entz and offensive coordinator Josh Davis were going over his film at the recommendation of Bulldogs assistant wide receivers coach DelVon Hardaway.
The connection between Ayon and Hardaway stemmed back when they were both at Fresno City College.
The 6-foot-3 and 200 pound former Buchanan High and Fresno City College waited. He even said Hardaway called to say they were still watching his film.
“I was so nervous,” he said. “I was hoping he would text me back with some good news or something.”
Ayon said he checked his X, formerly known as Twitter and that is when Davis reached out and told him he liked Ayon’s film.
“Wanted to bring me down to campus,” he said. “I couldn’t believe it.”
Then coach Entz called and that is when Ayon finally realized “this is actually real like.”
Ayon made his official visit and came away impressed. They asked him how many years he has remaining and he told them one.
Entz transferred to Western Colorado from Fresno City and helped the Mountaineers to a 11-2 overall record after he led the team with 651 receiving yards and nine touchdowns.
Ayon received an offer he was looking for and committed to the Bulldogs.
“Coach said he liked that I got good hands,” he said. “The situation couldn’t have been better.”
