Fresno State football adds Iowa transfer from portal. Another player withdraws his name
A third college football player in the transfer portal is headed to Fresno State under head coach Matt Entz.
Sophomore offensive tackle Kyson Van Vugt announced on X, formerly known as Twitter, that he has committed to the Bulldogs Sunday afternoon.
He joins linebacker Jadon Pearson and Simeon Harris, who both became the first transfer portal signees under head Entz, who was hired on Dec. 4.
He visited Fresno State Friday and Saturday and came away impressed.
“It was great, believe it or not,” he said. “Fresno felt a lot more similar to the Midwest than I thought. My conversations with Coach Entz were great. He’s an incredible football coach and I can’t wait to get down to Fresno and get to work.”
Van Vugt, listed at 6-foot-6 and 282 pounds, arrived at Iowa in 2022 and redshirted. He was moved from tight end to the offensive line the following season in the spring, but didn’t play in the 2024 season.
At Western Christian High in Sioux Center, Iowa, he was first-team all-state and all-district honors as a senior. He was a defensive end and a tight end where he had 30 receptions for 409 yards and two touchdowns.
Defensive back Alzillion Hamilton, meanwhile, has withdrawn his name from the transfer portal and will play in Monday’s Famous Idaho Potato Bowl against Northern Illinois, according to 247Sports affiliate Barkboard.
He is the second player to withdraw his name, joining wide receiver Josiah Freeman.
