Fresno State football recruits react to news that coach Jeff Tedford is stepping down
Jeff Tedford stepping down as Fresno State football coach surprised several high school seniors who are committed to the Bulldogs for 2020.
Players reached Friday said they remain committed, but at least two said they will look at other options. The NCAA football early signing period is Dec. 18-20, followed by national signing day Feb. 5.
In announcing his move Friday, Tedford said he’s dealing with medical issues but plans to stay around the program in some capacity.
San Joaquin Memorial wide receiver Mac Dalena said he’s committed to his hometown school. He said his only concern is “hoping Coach Tedford’s health is OK, and he stays around the program.”
Tracy quarterback Logan Fife reaffirmed his commitment to the Bulldogs. He watched Friday’s news conference where Tedford and athletic director Terry Tumey spoke.
“The things Coach Tedford and the athletic director said were very relieving to hear and I look forward to finding out who the new head coach at Fresno State is,” Fife said.
He said he has upcoming in-home and official campus visits and will sign on Dec. 18.
Serrano-Phelan tight end Matt Lowe also said he will remain committed to Fresno State and sent his well-wishes to Tedford: “He needs to worry about himself.”
Cajon-San Bernardino cornerback Kamron Forest, who announced Nov. 27 that he’s coming to Fresno State, said he’s still committed.
Other options?
Faith Lutheran-Las Vegas linebacker Hunter Kaupiko said, “as of right now I am still committed. I’m still a Bulldog.” But, he said, he will talk with his family.
“I spoke with Coach Tedford a couple weeks ago on the phone and he sounded good,” Kaupiko said. “When I found out he was stepping down I was shocked.
“I’m going to have a talk with my family today about possible looking at other options.”
Same goes for Palo Alto wide receiver Jamir Shepard: He remains committed but will be “re-thinking my decision.”
Coaches can’t discuss recruits until the school has received the player’s signed letter of intent.
