Fresno’s Central Unified schools close in on naming new superintendent. Here’s the latest
Central Unified School District is on track to name its new superintendent next month.
At Tuesday night’s board meeting, the Central Unified school board approved a 15-person panel consisting of seven staff members, a student and a mix of parents and community members. The group will interview candidates on May 6 and 7 before offering a recommendation to the board.
“I do want to thank all that applied,” Trustee Phillip Cervantes said of dozens of community members who threw their hats into the ring to serve on the panel. “They’re all worthy.”
The names of the candidates are not being released to the public.
More than nine months have passed since the district’s previous superintendent Andrew Alvarado resigned following his arrest on suspicion of a domestic violence felony. The former superintendent was not charged.
The district’s assistant superintendent Ketti Davis has served as acting superintendent since June.
At an August 2021 board meeting, one community member voiced support for her to continue with the role, while another questioned her abilities.
The superintendent position was posted publicly from Jan. 31 through April 5, according to district spokesperson Gilbert Magallon.
The board is expected to make a final decision on the next superintendent at a meeting in May, according to the timeline drafted by McPherson and Jacobson, LLC, the search firm hired by the district.
The timeline lists July 1 as the anticipated start date for the next superintendent.
