Victim attacked with machete after intervening in argument, Fresno police say

A man was taken into police custody Monday morning after an standoff at a Fresno apartment.

Officers initially responded to the Crossroads Apartments at 3737 N. Blackstone Ave. just after 10 p.m. for a disturbance between a man and woman.

As officers were en route, the call was upgraded to a stabbing after another man tried to intervene before he was allegedly slashed on the face with a machete.

The victim was taken to a local hospital and was in stable condition, police said.

Fresno police Lt. Larry Bowlan said the victim and suspect got into a verbal confrontation when the victim got involved and was cut at least once. The suspect, who is in his 50s, walked to his apartment and barricaded himself for several hours until the SWAT team arrived and threw tear gas into the apartment.

The suspect surrendered 10 minutes later, Bowlan said.

He was taken into custody without incident and two machetes were located inside the doorway.

Officers couldn’t find the woman when they arrived at the location and was unknown if she lived there.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 559-621-7000.
