A wanted suspect is in jail but not before he tried to run away from Fresno officers by jumping into the canal.

Officers were patrolling the area of Belmont and Van Ness avenues in the Tower District around 6:30 p.m. when they spotted a man who had a felony warrant for his arrest, Fresno police Lt. Marcus Gray III said.

Officers tried to stop the suspect when he took off running and jumped into the canal and tried to get away. He attempted to go under the bridge but couldn’t because it was cluttered with trash, Gray III said.

Officers surrounded the canal and the suspect was unable to get out.

The Fresno Fire Department responded to the scene and had a boat ready. Crews threw a rope and the suspect grabbed it and was helped to the side of the canal.

He was pulled out and officers placed him under arrest. He was taken to Community Regional Medical Center as a precautionary measure.
