Suspicious death ruled a homicide in Fresno. Police say son murdered his mother

A man has been arrested on suspicion of killing his mother at a Fresno home Monday night, homicide detectives said in an update Wednesday.

Officers initially called it a suspicious death after responding to the home near East Cortland Avenue and Ninth Street for a welfare check for a woman who didn’t show up to work Monday.

Officers found 62-year-old Shirla Ramirez inside her home at 3:41 p.m. unresponsive. She was pronounced dead.

Detectives and the Fresno County Coroner’s Office found her injuries to be caused by blunt force trauma and several lacerations to the upper body. Her death was determined to be a homicide, police said.

Detectives learned Ramirez lived alone and had called out from work on Friday, claiming family issues.

They identified her 35-year-old son, Brad Ramirez, as the person responsible for her death.

He was taken into custody Wednesday after being discharged from Community Regional Medical Center on an unrelated matter, police said.

The motive for the killing is unknown.
