Fresno teen faces charges after woman was fatally shot by her 2-year-old
An 18-year-old man who lived at a Fresno apartment where a toddler shot and killed its mother earlier this month has been charged with three crimes by the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office.
Andrew Isaac Sanchez is facing two counts of child abuse along with first-degree criminal storage of a firearm after 22-year-old Jessinya Mina was shot to death by her 2 1/2-year-old at an apartment at Fresno Street and San Jose Avenue around 5:30 p.m. Dec. 6.
Mina died of a single gunshot wound to the upper body.
She also lived in the apartment with Sanchez, the toddler and her 8-month-old infant.
Police said detectives learned Sanchez left a loaded 9mm handgun in a location within their bedroom, where children were able to access it.
“While handling the firearm, the toddler was able to pull the trigger, resulting in Mina being struck,” police said.
Sanchez was arraigned Friday morning and pleaded not guilty.
The DA’s Office said he is out of custody and on pretrial supervision.
His next court date is Feb. 6 and a criminal protective order has also been issued.
If convicted, he is facing up to eight years in prison.
