Elementary school lockdown lifted after shooting at nearby Fresno apartments

An elementary school in southeast Fresno was locked down Wednesday afternoon following a nearby shooting.

Balderas School on Florence Avenue just east of Maple Avenue was locked down about 2 p.m. after a shooting at a nearby apartment complex. The lockdown was lifted by 3 p.m., according to a Fresno Unified spokeswoman.

The gunman was at large.

Lt Bill Dooley said the victim, a man in his 20s, was shot at an apartment complex in the 2200 block of South Maple Avenue. After the shooting, the victim, struck in the upper torso, ran to another complex just to the north of the original scene, where he was located by emergency personnel.

He was in critical-but-stable condition at Community Regional Medical Center.

Detectives were also at the hospital, trying to gather information from him about who the shooter might be. Officers were also interviewing witnesses at the shooting scene.
