Man found in back of car near Fresno school with gunshot wounds, police say

Police were investigating the scene of a shooting on Monday in central Fresno.

Officers at about 7:30 a.m. were called to Robinson Avenue west of Barton Avenue, near Cedar and Dakota avenues, after a man was shot multiple times, according to Capt. Mindy Casto.

Police found a man in his 40s in the back of a car bleeding from wounds, but it was not immediately clear if he was in the car when shot, Casto said. The investigation is in its early stages, she noted.

People with the victim provided first aid until the ambulance arrived, police said. Officers were speaking to neighbors to find any witnesses.

The victim was taken to an area hospital to undergo surgery, police said.

A car that may have been driven away from the scene stalled out near Duncan Polytechnical High School on Garland Avenue, leading officers to block off a section of that road, Casto said.

Students were not on campus on Monday, according to the district calendar.

“The officers are canvassing the neighborhood,” Casto said. “This is a very nice neighborhood, not something we typically see here.”
