Dispute during Fresno basketball game ends in shooting. What police know about suspect

Fresno police are searching for a gunman after a shooting erupted during a basketball game Saturday afternoon at Romain Park.

Officers sped to the park on First Street just north of Belmont Avenue in central Fresno shortly after 2 p..m.

Lt. Mark Hudson said the game was taking place inside the gym when an argument erupted and a man pulled a handgun and fired one round, striking the victim on the side of the head. Fortunately, the bullet did not penetrate the victim’s skull, instead deflecting.

The assailant jumped in a black SUV and fled. Police are searching for the vehicle. The victim was rushed to Community Regional Medical Center.

There were several dozen people using the park at the time, prompting Hudson to note it was fortunate that one one else was injured. Detectives were expected to be on scene for several hours.
