Man shot and killed while sitting in living room at a Fresno home. Was he targeted?

A man was shot and killed Monday evening inside a central Fresno home in an apparent drive-by shooting.

The shooting happened at 11:36 p.m., in the 2700 block of East Clinton Avenue, Fresno Police Lt. Paul Cervantes said.

Responding officers found a man in his 60s suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper body. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cervantes said the man was sitting in the living room by the mail slot next to the front door and was watching television when a shot was fired, striking the man with other family members, including children, inside the home.

It is not known if the people inside the home were targeted, Cervantes said, but one shell casing was found in the middle of the roadway.

The department’s ShotSpotter electronic gunfire surveillance system did not pick up any gunfire. Detectives were canvassing the area from Blackstone Avenue to the railroad tracks on East Clinton Avenue and checking any surveillance video that picked up a suspect vehicle.

Cervantes said at least one round was fired.

“There is no indication that they were necessarily targeted for any particular reason at this point,” Cervantes said. “But we have not yet ruled that out.”

The family members told officers they heard gunshots and heard a vehicle taking off at a high rate of speed.

“They necessarily didn’t put two-and-two together immediately,” Cervantes said. “It was only after they realized that their loved one was struck by gunfire and realized that potentially been involved.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 559-621-7000.
