Police: Teenager shot and killed while driving through Fresno neighborhood

A teenager was shot and killed while driving in a southeast Fresno neighborhood Monday night.

According to Lt. Bill Dooley, at around 7 p.m. officers got reports of a shooting victim in the area of Barton and Washington avenues. Officers at the scene found a vehicle with a driver and passenger inside crashed into the hedge in the front yard of a home.

The 17-year-old driver, identified as Lance San of Fresno, had a gunshot wound and was taken to Community Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The passenger was unharmed and told officers he had passed out during the shooting and was unable to see who shot at them, Dooley said.

Through an investigation, officers learned the vehicle was traveling south on Barton when they were shot at in the intersection at Grant Avenue. Multiple bullet casings were found, but the number of shooters and shots fired were unknown.

Dooley said it is unknown yet if the homicide was gang-related.
