Homeless woman stabbed in downtown Fresno

A homeless woman was stabbed multiple times during a scuffle with a man Saturday morning in downtown Fresno.

The call about a stabbing victim near O Street and Mariposa Street in front of the State Building at 2550 Mariposa Mall came in about 10 a.m.

Authorities said the woman confronted the man as he was going through her possessions. An altercation took place and the woman is believed to have been stabbed several times with an unknown object, California Highway Patrol spokesman Mike Salas said.

She was taken to Community Regional Medical Center and listed in critical condition. No other details about the woman, including her age, were released.

The man was gone by the time police arrived.

An attempted murder investigation is ongoing. The call was made to the Fresno Police Department, but the case was turned over to the Highway Patrol because the incident was on state property.

Anyone with information is asked to call 559-262-0400.
