Days after shots rang out at Huron motel, case becomes city’s second homicide of year
A case of a Sunday night shooting in Huron has turned into a homicide investigation after the victim died Thursday evening.
Javier Merino Perez, 27, of Huron was hospitalized in critical condition after Huron police officers found him suffering from a gunshot wound under a carport at the Encino Motel on Lassen Avenue. Police were called to the motel after a caller reported hearing shots fired at about 11 p.m. Sunday.
It’s the second homicide of the year for the small western Fresno County city, following the shooting of a 19-year-old earlier this month.
The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office took over the investigation at the request of Huron police.
Detectives said that tenants at the motel heard gunshots and called police. So far, however, no suspect in the shooting has been identified. Investigators are asking anyone who may have heard or seen anything in the area around the motel, which is at the corner of Lassen Avenue and Cherry Street, between 9:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. Sunday.
Witnesses can call the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office at 559-600-3111 or report tips anonymously to Valley Crime Stoppers by calling 559-498-7867, www.valleycrimestoppers.org.
