Detectives track down Le Grand man accused of killing 16-year-old boy in San Joaquin
Update
The man accused of shooting and killing a 16-year-old boy Monday night in San Joaquin was caught Tuesday in Salinas, according to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff’s spokesman Tony Botti said in a news release that detectives learned the alleged shooter had been in a previous dating relationship with the boy’s mother, but added that detectives had not established a motive.
The boy was identified as Angel Trejo. His 20-year-old brother was also shot; he was reported to be in stable condition at a hospital Tuesday afternoon with non-life-threatening wounds.
Botti said shooting suspect Hileberto Valtierra Jr., 36, of Le Grand in Merced County knew both victims. Valtierra was arrested in Salinas without incident and was being brought to Fresno for booking in the county jail.
The shooting took place about 9 p.m. at the Garden Valley Apartments in the 9500 block of Flores Drive, Botti said. Detectives working through the night developed tips that Valtierra was the suspected shooter and that he might have fled to Salinas. Fresno County authorities working with Salinas police found Valtierra riding in a car near a home where he was believed to be hiding out.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Adrian Villegas at 559-600-8210 or to be eligible for a reward submit tips to Valley Crime Stoppers at 559-498-7867 or www.valleycrimestoppers.org.
