One man was killed in a fire that broke out at a Fresno apartment building Wednesday evening.

Fresno Fire Department spokesperson Josh Sellers said the fire broke out around 6 p.m. at the 2100 block of North First Street, south of Clinton Avenue.

The fire started in a unit that’s part of a fourplex apartment building, and callers reported that someone may have been trapped inside.

Firefighters confirmed that — while one person had escaped the affected unit — another person was still inside, Sellers said.

While searching inside, firefighters found an adult man in the room where the fire began. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A total of 63 firefighters responded to the fire. One firefighter was treated at a nearby hospital for minor burns.

Sellers said the fire spread from the unit to the building’s shared attic space. All four units in the building were damaged, and 15 people were displaced.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
