California Highway Patrol spokesperson Mike Salas said a loud explosion and smoke prompted authorities to the area, south of Highway 180 and the Sequoia Kings Canyon National Park boundary.
Salas said officers learned from Sequoia National Forest officials that a vehicle was involved, and first responders located the burned vehicle around 9:30 a.m. with a person pronounced dead at the scene.
Salas said the unidentified driver was traveling south on Hume Lake Road in a Toyota sedan when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle veered off the east side of the road and crashed head-on into a rock embankment.
The impact caused the vehicle to catch fire and become fully engulfed.
Salas said it is unknown whether the driver was affiliated with nearby Hume Lake Christian Camps, which is currently in session for the summer.
He also said alcohol and/or drugs have not been ruled out as contributing factors.
The crash remains under investigation.
