A pedestrian was killed Wednesday when he was struck by a semi near downtown Fresno.

Officers with the Fresno Police Department initially responded to the scene at 3:30 p.m. at the Highway 99/Fresno Street off-ramp.

The California Highway Patrol took over the investigation and said a Freightliner was stopped at a red light traffic signal in the No. 1 lane of the off-ramp while a man was walking west across Fresno Street within the marked crosswalk.

As the traffic signal turned green, the pedestrian was positioned in front of another stopped semi and was not visible to the driver of the Freightliner, which went forward and struck the pedestrian. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors in the crash.

The investigation is ongoing.
