California Highway Patrol officers responded to the crash at 11:16 p.m. on Highway 99, north of Madera Avenue.

CHP said the man was driving a black Mitsubishi Lancer, south on Highway 99 when, for reasons unknown, the vehicle veered off the roadway onto the west shoulder, traveled up an embankment, and collided with a tree as the vehicle overturned.

The driver was pronounced dead.

CHP said the driver was wearing a seatbelt but suspects alcohol was a factor.

The crash is under investigation.
