Fresno’s newest Grocery Outlet opens in popular shopping plaza. Take a look inside
The deals are about to kick in at Grocery Outlet’s latest location, which opened Thursday in north Fresno.
The store at 2990 E. Nees Ave. will replace one previously located several miles south, at Blackstone and Ashlan avenues. That location’s owners, Luis and Cristina Ramirez, ran it from February until the end of June and moved to the new spot.
Grocery Outlet occupies a building that had been vacant since 2022, when a Rite Aid store closed ahead of the company’s bankruptcy declaration.
Grocery Outlet prides itself on selling food and household products at or below the lowest local price. The company secures these products from brands that produce extra items or change their packaging.
As a result, the Ramirez family compared shopping at Grocery Outlet to a “treasure hunt.” Different stores stock different items, including some unavailable in conventional grocery stores. The family said it constantly restocks its shelves with new items.
Perusing through the long aisles, shoppers can find an assortment of unique goods, like Cinnamon Toast Crunch-flavored Hershey’s Kisses and chardonnay from the Second Cheapest Wine brand.
“If you see it today, grab it, because it might not be there tomorrow,” he said.
Grocery Outlet operates four other stores in Fresno and Clovis:
1848 Clovis Ave., Clovis
3566 W. Shaw Ave., Fresno
2820 Tulare St, Fresno
5175 E. Belmont Ave., Fresno
The new location is part of the popular Montecito Plaza shopping center.
The opening comes as Rite Aid, the location’s previous tenant, prepares to shutter 75% of its nationwide stores — including all of its Fresno locations.
Grocery Outlet signed its lease in February 2024 and received its building permit in November, according to John Lee, senior vice president of brokerage company Retail California. Once the company began construction, the building was essentially an “empty box,” Lee said.
Cristina Ramirez said she felt “pure excitement” transforming the former space into a bustling new spot for groceries. Previous Rite Aid shoppers can still find vitamins at the new store, she noted.
The couple has more than 40 years of combined retail experience. Cristina Ramirez said they prioritize strong customer service and aim to create a “family atmosphere” for both employees and customers.
“Bring your family to meet our family,” she said.
