Man walking on Manning Avenue in Fresno County killed after getting hit by car, CHP says

A 38-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle early Thursday in Fresno County.

The collision happened at 12:50 a.m. on Manning Avenue, east of Zediker Avenue, the California Highway Patrol said.

A 22-year-old man was driving a Kia Optima east on Manning in the No. 1 left lane when for unknown reasons a 38-year-old man from Parlier was walking within the same lane ahead of the Kia.

The driver hit the brakes but was unable to avoid hitting the pedestrian, CHP spokesperson Mike Salas said. The pedestrian was struck by the front of the Kia and was thrown into the center median.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead.

The driver of Kia remained at the scene and cooperated with officers. Alcohol and drugs were ruled out as factors in the crash, Salas said.

A toxicology report is pending for the deceased pedestrian.
