Bicyclists injured in altercation with motorist in Fresno. Driver arrested for assault
Three bicyclists were taken to the hospital Saturday afternoon following a fight in Fresno.
Officers responded just before 2:45 p.m. to Chestnut and Balch avenues and located two teens and a man who had been struck by a white Dodge mid-size SUV.
The teens and the man were taken to a local hospital.
The two teens had minor to moderate injuries and the man suffered major injuries, Fresno Police Lt. Skye Leibee said.
Police said there was a group of about 20 bicyclists riding south on Chestnut from Belmont when an argument occurred between the bicyclists and the driver of the Dodge, a 23-year-old man.
The driver pulled to the side of the road and a fight occurred.
After the brawl, the bicyclists continued riding on Chestnut. Leibee said the Dodge purposely drove up onto the west sidewalk and struck the two teenagers.
Leibee said the driver backed up, then pulled forward, and continued to drive south on Chestnut and he appeared to purposely strike the man on a bicycle, who was riding south in the bike lane.
After the collisions, Leibee said the driver was physically assaulted by several bicyclists. He suffered minor injuries and was also taken to the hospital.
The driver of the Dodge was arrested on suspicion of three counts of assault with a deadly weapon (vehicle).
He’ll be booked into Fresno County Jail once he’s cleared from the hospital.
