Update: Man killed in fiery crash in foggy conditions in Fresno County identified
A man was killed Tuesday morning in a fog-related crash in Fresno County.
The California Highway Patrol said the crash happened at 9:30 a.m. at the intersection of McCall and Parlier avenues.
CHP spokesman Mike Salas said the man and a woman were traveling west on Parlier in a Chevrolet truck. The driver stopped at the stop sign at the intersection with McCall as a big rig traveling north on McCall approached the intersection.
McCall Avenue is not controlled by a stop sign at this intersection.
Salas said the big rig entered the intersection, but the Chevrolet truck pulled forward and struck the right front of the big rig. The impact lodged the Chevrolet under the big rig, causing significant damage and ejecting the driver onto the roadway.
The Chevrolet then became engulfed in flames. The big rig came to a stop on the east shoulder, and its driver was not injured, Salas said.
A passing motorist pulled the woman passenger from the wreckage. She was taken to a local hospital by ambulance.
The Chevrolet driver was pronounced dead.
On Wednesday, the Fresno County Coroner’s Office reported the identity of the man killed as Armando Jimenez Cadena, 36, of Del Rey; and that the female passenger remained in critical condition.
At the scene, Salas said visibility in the area was reduced due to foggy conditions, which may have been a factor in the crash.
Salas said there was an increase in crashes in Fresno County on Tuesday, many caused by excessive speed and poor judgment in foggy conditions.
“Drivers are urged to make responsible choices behind the wheel: slow down, buckle up, and use low beam headlights when driving in foggy weather,” Salas said.
