Child dragged by car, mom hit also, Fresno police say. It happened near school

A mother and young child were struck by a car near an elementary school Thursday in Fresno, police said.

The mother and four children were crossing First Street near Princeton Avenue about 8 a.m. headed to school, officer Christopher Clark said.

The Volkswagen driver, a 70-year-old woman, was turning left from eastbound Princeton onto First Street when she struck the mother, he said.

The car dragged an 11-year-old girl about a quarter mile, Clark said. Her injuries were not considered serious, he said, adding she was able to walk and talk afterwards.

The mother was transported with injuries to a local hospital as well as the 11-year-old and a 4-year-old girl, police said.

The driver remained on scene, which was just outside Birney Elementary School.

The crash was the second in two days involving a crash between vehicles and schoolchildren.

Eleven students were injured Wednesday from a crash that unfolded next to the Roosevelt High School campus in Fresno. Their injuries were not severe.
