Young child among two killed in Fresno County crash, CHP says. Several others hurt

Two people were killed including a young child Friday in a crash in rural Fresno County, the California Highway Patrol said.

The crash about 8 a.m. at Jefferson and Bethel avenues near Del Rey involved a man driving a Honda sedan with a child passenger about 5 years old, officer Mike Salas said. The driver appears to have run a stop sign, Salas added.

A Chevrolet Suburban going north on Bethel without a stop sign wasn’t able to stop before the collision, he said. The Chevy broadsided the passenger side of the Honda.

Both vehicles ended up in an orchard to the east of the intersection.

The man and boy were pronounced dead at the scene, he said.

Salas said it was not clear why the Honda driver did not stop, whether he was distracted or blinded by the sun.

He said some rural county intersections should be treated with extra caution while driving.

“Very heartbreaking. Very tragic,” Salas said. “A lot of these intersections do not have four-way stops.”

A family of five in the Suburban was transported with minor to moderate injuries, he said.
