Man found dead after hit-and-run in Fresno County, CHP says. May have been hit twice

A hit-and-run driver in western Fresno County was arrested after leaving the scene of a crash where a pedestrian was found dead, the California Highway Patrol said.

The victim was struck about 8:30 p.m. near Shields and Bishop avenues in a rural area of the county, CHP officer Mike Salas confirmed.

The man, who has not been identified, was lying in the roadway in the area and it was unclear if he was hit by more than one car, CHP said.

Officers said a 32-year-old Kerman man struck the pedestrian and got out to check on him. A witness stopped and saw the Kerman man, who was driving a 2010 Honda Pilot, check on the pedestrian before leaving the scene.

The witness followed the Honda to a home on Floyd Avenue not far away, CHP said. Fresno County Sheriff’s deputies detained the man until CHP officers could get on scene.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of fleeing the scene of the fatal crash, CHP said. He was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, officers said.

Whether the pedestrian was impaired was pending a toxicology report, CHP said.

Officers were still investigating whether the pedestrian had been previously struck by a car before the Honda.

Anyone with information was asked by CHP to call Fresno-area call center at 559-262-0400. Valley Crime Stoppers also takes tips anonymously at 559-498-7867.
