Driver prevents ‘dire situation’ after pulling toddler from Fresno County canal

A toddler was saved from a potentially deadly fate Tuesday when a motorist stopped in rural Fresno County to pull the 18-month-old away from a canal, the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office said.

The baby was visiting a home near Manning and Crawford avenues east of Reedley about 10:25 a.m. with family members when the child slipped through a space in a fence and headed towards the water, Lt. Edward Essegian said.

The child’s parents had looked away when the toddler slipped out through the back fence, he said.

A good Samaritan traveling in the area noticed the baby with their feet in the canal water and stopped their car to rush to the child’s aid, and “prevented a dire situation,” Essegian said.

The child was expected to be OK, he said.
