Driver killed east of Fresno when he crashed into big rig identified by coroner

A driver killed June 7 when he crashed into a trailer pulled by a big rig east of Fresno was identified Tuesday by the Fresno County Coroner.

The victim, Jose Cortez Guzman, 48, of San Joaquin, was at the wheel of a Ford Ranger on Shields Avenue when he ran a stop sign, according to the California Highway Patrol. The pickup collided with the big rig, which was northbound on Academy Avenue , according to California Highway Patrol spokesman Mike Salas.

The victim’s pickup caught fire while trapped under the trailer as the big rig driver tried to bring his vehicle to a stop. Cortez Guzman died at the scene. The big rig driver was unhurt.
