Fiery crash in Fresno County kills driver as trailer drags truck, CHP says
UPDATE: Driver killed east of Fresno when he crashed into big rig identified by coroner
At least one person was killed Wednesday in a fiery crash when a truck wedged under a trailer in eastern Fresno County, the California Highway Patrol said.
The fatal crash happened about 11 a.m. on northbound Academy Avenue at Shields Avenue, officer Mike Salas said.
The driver of the Ford Ranger truck ran a stop sign going west on Shields and slammed into the trailer pulled by a big rig headed north on Academy, he said.
It took some time to stop the trailer, which dragged the truck as it caught fire, Salas said.
The driver of the truck was pronounced dead at the scene, where officers continued to investigate. Salas said officers believe the driver was alone.
The big rig driver was not hurt.
The north lane was expected to be closed for two hours.
